Vicky Kimball Brainerd

Vicky L. (Kimball) Brainerd, 61, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, as a result of complications from surgery at a local medical facility.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Vicky was born May 8, 1948, in Sioux City, the daughter of Eugene L. and Sally J. (Scherner) Kimball. She graduated from Central High School in 1966. On Dec. 28, 1969, she married Michael P. Brainerd in Sioux City. Two daughters, Jamie and Stephanie, were born to the union. The couple later divorced.

After being a stay-at-home mom for her two girls, she returned to school and received her nursing degree from Western Iowa Technical Community College. She worked as an R.N. at Marian Health Center for 15 years. In 1997, she moved to Sioux Falls, where she was currently an R.N. charge nurse at Select Specialty Hospital.

Vicky enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, movies and riding her Harley Davidson. More than anything else, she especially loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was affectionately called "Boggie" by her "grandbabies."

Survivors include two daughters, Jamie Ostermyer of Sioux Falls, and Stephanie Linden and her husband, Keith of Dakota Dunes; four grandchildren, Henry, Freddie, Isabelle and Lucy Linden; her mother, Sally Kimball of Sioux City; a brother, Craig Kimball and his wife, Lori of Fountain, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Steve Letnes of St. Cloud, Minn.; an uncle, Howard R. Scherner of McCook Lake; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gene Kimball and a sister, Judy Ann Letnes.

Memorials may be made in her name to St. Jude's Hospital in care of the family.
