Margaret Bowers, 103, of Sioux City, went home to be with her Lord, on Thursday, March 15, 2007. She had been a resident of Bickford Cottage for the last three years. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 19, 2007 at Calvary Lutheran Church with Reverend David Schoop officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Margaret was born August 25, 1903 to Edo and Nettie (Schultz) Harms in Struble, Grant Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. She attended country school in Grant Township through the 7th grade, followed by study of the Lutheran Catechism in German for one year. This work led to her confirmation of faith at St. Johns Lutheran Church in LeMars, Iowa in 1917. Margaret, the oldest girl of eleven children, spent her teen years helping her parents to raise her younger brothers and sisters on the family farm.
She married Alfred Bowers on September 21, 1922 in Le Mars, Plymouth County, Iowa. The couple farmed for several years in Plymouth County near Adaville, in the Johnson Township area before moving to LeMars. They later moved to Sioux City, Iowa in 1928. Margaret and Alfred shared responsibility in the operation of their business, Bowers Produce, in the suburb of Leeds from 1949 until 1960. Upon their retirement from the business, she became a full time housewife. She enjoyed baking for her family and friends as well as playing cards and socializing with her friends and siblings. Margaret held her family very near to her heart and would spend as much time with her brothers, sisters, son and daughter-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren as she could. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church for most of her adult life.
Margaret is survived by three grandchildren and their families; Karen and Dennis Gross of Sioux City and their two children, Sarah Jane and her husband, Daniel Feltes, and Andrew Gross; Susan and Reginald McCloud of Sioux City and their four children, Jennifer and her husband, Keith Gengler, Emily and her husband, Sam Mogensen, Molly McCloud and Christopher McCloud; and Rev. Michael and Ruth Ann Bowers of Janesville, Wisconsin and their twelve children, Adam, Benjamin, Abigail, Thomas, Daniel, Joseph, Olivia, Luke, Elizabeth, John, Michael II, and Gabriel Bowers; four great, great granddaughters, Ellie Kay, Maddie and Kylie Gengler and Hannah Mogensen; Two sisters, Pearl Brunstedt of Merrill, Iowa and Bertha Briley of LeMars; one sister-in-law, Elaine Harms of Sioux City and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alfred in 1983; her son and daughter-in-law Leonard and Joyce Bowers; five brothers, George, Charles, Albert, Fredrick and John; two sisters, Amelia and Nettie and an infant child.
Serving as casket bearers will be Andrew Gross, Christopher McCloud, Adam Bowers, Benjamin Bowers, Thomas Bowers, Daniel Feltes, Keith Gengler and Sam Mogensen.
