Robert E. Bonnes, 76, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, at his residence.
Memorial services will be noon Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery. Robert Edward "Bob" Bonnes was born July 1, 1930, in Sioux City, to Oliver and Gea (Engan) Bonnes. He was raised on a farm near Hinton, Iowa, and attended country school through the sixth grade. He then moved to Sioux City, where he attended North Junior High School and graduated from Central High School in 1949. He attended Morningside College for a period of time studying livestock marketing. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves during the Korean Conflict.
He married Colleen Ann Carlson on June 20, 1952, in Sioux City. In 1949, he and his good friend, Gene Allen, formed Allen and Bonnes Paint Company. Throughout his painting career, he worked for Rufus Holtzen, then Richard Holtzen and finally Chick Blankenship with Blankenship Painting. He retired at the age of 62.
He was a member of Landmark Masonic Lodge, York Rite, Abu Bekr Shrine and the Rat Patrol Shrine Unit. He and his wife loved to dance and play cards. He enjoyed his retirement, coffee with his friends and his second home at the lake, where he shared many special times with his family. He loved animals and enjoyed his dog, Keto, and cat, Willie.
He loved his family and is survived by his wife of 55 years, Colleen; three daughters and their husbands, Barb and Warren Smith of Hampton, Iowa, Patti and Bruce Garbe and Sandy and Dave Johnston, all of Sioux City; his beloved grandchildren, Kelly Schmidt, Kari and Colter Schmidt, Kim Schmidt, Jaime Grant, Tricia Garbe, Bryce and Steve Johnston; and a great-granddaughter, Kamryn Sanders; a sister, Pearl Miller; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Bonnes; a brother-in-law and his wife, Stanley and Charlene Carlson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
Memorials may be sent in his name to Hospice of Siouxland and the Siouxland Humane Society.
Bob was a kind man who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
