Helen V. Bollman

Helen Verstegen Bollman, 91, of Sioux City died Friday, April 28, 2006, at St. Benedict's Care Center in St. Cloud, Minn., from congestive heart disease.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Don Wood officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Helen Louise Verstegen was born Oct. 11, 1914, in Sioux City, the eldest of Peter Henry Verstegen and Edna Marie Ostlund Verstegen's five children. She was a graduate of Sioux City Central High School, Stephen's College, National Business College and Morningside College.She married Harold Lee "Buck" Bollman on Oct. 18, 1938, in Sioux City. She lived in Sioux City her entire life until a few months ago in the final stages of her illness, when she went to St. Cloud, Minn. to be near family.

She was a civic leader in Sioux City, where she had been the executive director of the YWCA and involved in many advocacy efforts. She had worked in her family's business, the Verstegen Printing and Lithographing Company.She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She also was an active community volunteer and a supporter of the performing and visual arts. She was a past president and sustaining member of the Junior League of Sioux City, the P.E.O. Chapter GR, St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary, Quota Club and other civic groups. Her family was her greatest joy and she loved to spend time with them anywhere but especially at her Lake Vermillion, Minn., cabin.

Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Jana and Charles Preble of St. Joseph, Minn., and Virginia and Michael Hale of McLean, Va.; five grandchildren, Margaret Preble Lahammer of Red Wing, Minn., Katherine Preble of Minneapolis, Kristin Avery of Houston, Texas, Mary Hale of Cambridge, Mass., and Stephen Hale of Philadelphia, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Audrey Helen Lahammer and Andrew William Avery; a sister and her husband, Gertrude (Verstegen) and Neal Hinrichs of Lakewood, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Jim Bogle of Girardeau, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter Henry Verstegen and Edna Ostlund Verstegen; two sisters, Lorraine Verstegen Ely and Jean Verstegen Bogle; and a brother, Richard Verstegen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First United Methodist Church in Sioux City or Lake Vermillion Greenwood Township Fire and Rescue in Tower, Minn.
