Orvis Berg

Orvis "Curly" Berg, 89, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at Countryside Senior Living, following an extended illness.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Augustana Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Orvis was born on Dec. 7, 1916, in Canton, S.D., the son of Tom A. and Minnie C. (Grevlos) Berg. He lived in Canton until the family moved to LuVerne, Minn. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater for the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945, attaining the rank of sergeant. After his honorable discharge, he relocated to Sioux Falls, S.D., and worked at Hyde Jewelers.

He married Joan H. Huber on May 4, 1945, in Sioux Falls. They moved to Sioux City, where he worked in the parts departments of various auto dealerships.

Orvis loved to tinker and spent a lot of spare time in his workshop. He experienced great joy in helping others, and one of his favorite places to volunteer was at Augustana Lutheran Church, where he was a member for 60 years. During his retirement, Orvis enjoyed restoring antique automobiles, including a 1922 Hupmobile and a 1925 Packard paddy wagon. He and Joan were members of the Siouxland Antique Auto Club.

Survivors include his wife, Joan; a son, Thomas of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two daughters, Barbara Dunlap-Berg and her husband, Larry of Nashville, Tenn., and Debra Sypersma and her husband, Jeff, of Sioux City; his grandchildren, Gina (Sypersma) Duffy, Katie (Sypersma) Olson, Jason Berg, Tim Sypersma, Megan (Dunlap-Berg) Cobb and Kristen Dunlap-Berg; and two great-grandchildren, Keegan and Kennedy Olson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Ethel.
