Gabriel V. Bartek, 78, of Sioux City died Saturday, June 9, 2007, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Gabriel was born on July 19, 1928, in Colon, Neb., the son of Frank and Magdeline (Buresh) Bartek. He was raised in the Colon and Wahoo, Neb. area.
He married Darlene Focht on Sept. 28, 1946, and they were blessed with four children, Jeanne, Michael, Patricia and Steve. Darlene preceded him in death in September of 2002 in Sioux City. Gabe was employed as a heavy machine operator before he retired. He had the privilege of working for several companies over a span of 45 years including Leonard Gill Construction and Jack Pinney Construction.
Survivors include four children, Jeanne Derby of McCook Lake, S.D., Michael Bartek and his wife, Nancy of Sioux City, Patricia Dorn and her husband, Kevin of Sioux City and Steve Bartek and his wife, Ruth of Elk Point, S.D.; 10 grandchildren, Amie Derby, Emma (Derby) Rooney, Patty (Derby) Strawn, Christopher and Anthony Bartek, Samantha Harkness, Elyse Tibbe, Justina (Georgesen) Clark, Lisa Williams and Laura Bartek; 11 great-grandchildren, Dannie and Jasmine Derby, Willis, Jackson and Isabella Strawn, Aspen and Hannah Bartek and Christian and Conner Williams, Paxton and Payton Harkness; a sister, Sally Nickelson; a sister-in-law, Blanche Bartek; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Butch Garnet and Manny; and his dog, Chrissy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene; two brothers, Frank and Joseph Bartek; and a sister, Magdeline Bartek.
