SIOUX CITY -- Leo L. Barnes, 70, of Sioux City died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding of St. Boniface Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Leo was born Aug. 30, 1940, in Sioux City, the son of Lowell and Parlee (Williams) Barnes.

He married Anna Hollinghead on April 2, 1960, in South Sioux City. He was a heavy equipment operator with Klinger, Holtz and Frank Audino Construction companies in Sioux City.

He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union 234. In his free time, he enjoyed collecting toys most of which were construction equipment cranes, loaders and trucks and doing wood carvings. Leo loved nature, but most of all, spending time with his family with special attention to grandchildren and great-grandchildren including his dogs, Fletcher and Benji.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Barnes of Sioux City; a son, Donald Barnes of Sioux City; a daughter, Donna Gates and her husband, Bill of Sioux City; three brothers, Ben, Milton and Jerry, all of Sioux City; three sisters, Noreen of Minnesota, Amelia of Nebraska, and Nettie of Omaha; five grandchildren, Shawna, Brody, Garrett, Lindsey and Ashley and her fiance, Brett; two great-grandchildren, Cason and Cohen; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jack; and two sisters, Evylen and Thelta.
