Gary M. Barbee

SERGEANT BLUFF -- Gary M. Barbee, 63, of Sergeant Bluff died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to meyerbroschapels.com.

Gary was born to Jiles F. Barbee and Alvina (Smith) Barbee, on Nov. 2, 1946, in Sioux City. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

On Dec. 31, 1981, he was united in marriage to Kristi Saltzgiver in Elk Point, S.D. He worked in production for Sara Lee for 10 years.

He enjoyed fishing and had a love for outdoor activities. He liked remodeling. He loved to spend time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Kristi Barbee of Sergeant Bluff; a son, Jason (Jaci) Saltzgiver of Sioux City; a daughter, Stacy (Brent) Heavican of Omaha; his mother, Alvina Barbee; three brothers, William (Julie) Barbee of Sioux City, Sonny Barbee of Sioux City and Robert (Sue) Barbee of Chicago, Ill.; five sisters, Rose Ann (Jerry) Mayo of Sioux City, Marie (Kelly) Schneider of Temple, Texas, Marjie Burke of Sioux City, Martha Moore of Sioux City and Marion (Dick) Brouillette of Elgin, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Karissa Heavican, Kody Saltzgiver, Kylee Saltzgiver and Evelyn Saltzgiver.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jiles F. Barbee; a brother, Ricky Barbee; and an infant sister, Beverly Barbee.
