SIOUX CITY -- Hughes J. Bagley Sr., 84, of Sioux City died Friday, April 17, 2009, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home from natural causes.

Hughes was born Dec. 13, 1924, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of William J. and Ivy (Wells) Bagley. He was educated in the public schools of Normandy, Mo. He received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Washington University in St. Louis in 1947. He was active in ROTC, Pershing Rifles, Pershing Rifles drill team and the Phi Delta Theta Social Fraternity.
He married Marilyn Blattner on May 5, 1945, in Normandy. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather to seven children, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He served in executive capacities in both the supermarket and meat packing industries. In early years, he was with Kroger Supermarkets in St. Louis, Charleston, W.V., Columbus, Ohio, and Chicago He served as president of Tradewell Stores in Seattle, Wash., vice president of Bohack Stores in New York, assistant to the president of First National Stores in Sommerville, Mass. and vice president of IBP in Dakota City. While at IBP, he developed the first successful program to market boxed beef, his area of expertise. He was vice president of Spencer Foods in Spencer, Iowa, vice president of Dubuque Packing in Denison, Iowa, president of Southwest Beef in Tolleson, Ariz. and chief operating officer of a franchise of Cub Foods in Atlanta, Ga. In his later years, he worked as a consultant to both supermarkets and packing houses.
He was a former member of the Sioux City Boat Club and the Sioux City Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Sioux City; seven children, Hughes A. Bagley Jr. and his wife, Martha of Sioux City, Herbert F. Bagley of St. Jacobs, Ill., Rebecca Hatch and her husband, Charles of Kennewick, Wash., Melissa Bagley-Mitrovic and her husband, Nenad of Chicago, Ill., Ellen Conigliaro of Huntington, N.Y., Heidi Trembly of Sioux City and Brett Bagley of Kansas City, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William J. Bagley Jr.; a sister, Barbara Bagley Cole; and a granddaughter, Sara Bagley.
