SIOUX CITY -- Ruth E. Backman, 86, of Sioux City died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Ruth was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Leicestershire, England, the daughter of Alfred and Mabel (Foxon) Scott. She grew up in England and attended schools there.
Ruth met Raynold Backman during World War II and they were married on Aug. 13, 1945, in Buckinghamshire, England. He died March 31, 1996, in Sioux City. The couple came to the United States after World War II, and moved to Sioux City in 1948. She worked for Sunshine Food Markets for 28 years.
She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and the outdoors.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Backman and his wife, Julie and Larry Backman and his wife, Maryann, all of Sioux City; three brothers, Roy Scott and his wife, Betty, Alf Scott and Richard Scott, all of England; four grandchildren, Haley, Maggie, Molly and Abby; four stepgrandchildren, Jill, Kristi, David and Brian; a great-grandchild; and three great-stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raynold; a brother, Brian; and a sister, Ruby.
Pallbearers will be Kevin, Keith and Bryce Pinkleman, Dennis Lagerloff, Al Richer and Mark Allard.
The family would like to thank the nurses at Mercy Medical Center and the staff at Regency Care Center for excellent care they provided Ruth.
