Diane K. Backman, 68, of Sioux City passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at a local hospital. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 5, 2009 from 3:00pm-8:00pm with the family present from 6:00pm-8:00pm A vigil and rosary service will begin at 7:00pm at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30am Monday, July 6, 2009 at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Father James Bruch celebrating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Diane was born on April 20, 1941 in Sioux City to John and Marguerite (ODea) Rose. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Heelan High School.

Diane married Robert Claude Backman on September 20, 1960 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. She worked at the Indian Youth of America as a prevention specialist. It was her passion in life trying to help the youth. She also worked at the Whistle Stop Casino approximately 15 years.

Diane was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in South Sioux City for many years and more recently at St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Diane is survived by her children, Christine Ayers and fianc Gary Townsley of Sioux City, Pat Backman and wife Penny of Yankton, SD, and Brian Backman of Sioux City, 3 grandchildren, Melanie Ayers, Mark Ayers, Jr., and Alex Hueber, 2 sisters, Patty Brown and her husband Dick and Debbie Saylor and her husband Garrie both of Sioux City. Diane was an angel walking amongst us on earth. She blessed so many of us with her inner grace, humor and beauty. She will be missed by all of us every day for the rest of or lives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a daughter, Becky.
