Goldie was born in Sioux City on March 1, 1916, to Louis and Anna Devine. She graduated from Central High School.
She married Sidney Matz on July 21, 1938. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Linda and Barbara. During this time, she worked with Sidney at their Pierce St. Market, a small grocery store on Pierce Street. She then went to work for Jean's Dress Shop, as a sales lady. Sidney passed away from cancer in 1976, one week after his 60th birthday.
Some years later, she married Danny Baker, who had owned and operated Danny's Restaurant on Military Road. Danny preceded her in death 19 years ago. She lived in her own home until moving to North Park for assisted living care. Seven years ago, her health declined and she moved to Holy Spirit Nursing Home.
She was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom. She was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain. She and Sidney often cooked and baked together. They loved to bowl and were on several leagues and loved to dance and danced to many of the Big Bands of that time. She loved people, going out for coffee with the ladies and going to dinner and movies. She played canasta, bridge and Mah-jong. She also loved to travel and visit friends and family. Her second husband, Danny, was also a great cook. They met while going to the old Sunshine Grocery Store daily for coffee. Danny was always there with the guys drinking coffee.
