Alan was born on January 18, 1950 in Atwood, KS to Clayton and Marjorie (Jacobs) Smith. He grew up in the South Sioux City, NE area around Crystal Lake and graduated from Central High School. He enlisted in the Navy February 22, 1971 and was honorably discharged March 15, 1976. He married Tina Osterholt in 1984 until 1988 and had two children. He was united in marriage to Patty Dolphin on March 23, 1998 through the present. Alan worked as a carpenter, cabinet maker and was very talented at all types of woodworking. He worked for Longlines, Pioneer Cabinetry, and Custom Woodworks, to name a few.
Alan loved the Kansas City Chiefs and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He enjoyed riding his unicycle, water skiing, swimming (in the Missouri River), scuba diving, and considered himself a fantastic harmonica player. He was on the Sioux City Dive and Rescue Team for a number of years. In later years, he enjoyed reading down by the river, feeding the squirrels and birds, playing solitaire on his phone and hanging out in the garage working on various projects while listening to the Underground Garage. Alan was known for his fun-natured attitude and could often be spotted on the news, the front page of the Sioux City Journal or mowing the lawn in his Speedo. He was always willing to help someone out, whether family, friend, or casual acquaintance. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Patty Smith, Sioux City, IA; children: Levi (Michelle) Smith, Megan (Mary) McMann, step-son Nicolas Petty, grandchildren: Kira Petty and Liam Smith, siblings: Theresa (John) Johnson, Sandi (El) Rasmussen, Linda (Richard) Dimond, Connie (Rick) Plueger, David (Lori) Smith, Pattie Osterholt, Mike (Sheila) Smith, Hulet (Lori D) Smith, Jeffrey (Miriam) Smith, Mike (Hollie) Johns, Mary Jo (Patrick Dirks) Johns, and Mitchell Smith.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law James Osterholt, 2 nephews, and 2 nieces.
