Alma Dorothy Andersen passed away on November 3, 2024 after a brief illness.
She was born to Danish immigrants on a farm in rural Homer NE, on December 27, 1930. Although named Alma Dorothy at birth, she went by Dorothy her whole life. She attended country school at Combs school and graduated from Homer High School in 1949. After high school, she attended Morningside College and graduated in 1953.
Dorothy taught in Vinton, Iowa for two years and then moved to St. Paul, MN where she taught at Maplewood Junior High, until her retirement.
While she lived in St. Paul, Dorothy enjoyed attending the theater and the chamber orchestra, skiing, gathering with friends and family, and traveling. She was pleased to have been able to travel on both the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth passenger liners to Europe and back.
Dorothy took great pride and interest in her Danish family heritage and was an active member of the Danish Center in St. Paul, MN. She was a long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Paul, singing in the choir for many years.
Due to loss of her vision, Dorothy moved to Stoneybrook in Dakota Dunes, SD to be near family during her final year of life.
Dorothy is survived by her nieces in Colorado, RJ Graham (Tom Kanan), Julie (Greg) Heil and their children Jennifer and Christopher, and one great grand niece and four great grand nephews. Survivors in Nebraska include her nephew Eric (Sharlene) Georgesen and their children, Erin and Matthew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thorvald and Mollie Andersen, sisters Jane Graham and Margaret Georgesen.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
