Arthur E. Denney

Arthur E. Denney, 89, of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018 at a local nursing home. A funeral service will be held Thursday, January 3, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Paul’s Indian Mission. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 2, from 4-8 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Burial will be at Santee Sioux Tribal Cemetery. Arthur was born on September 10, 1929 in Santee, NE to Chris and Marcella (Sherman) Denney. He grew up on the reservation until relocating to Los Angeles in the late 1950’s. He moved to Sioux City in the mid 1960’s and began working for a packing plant. He remained in Sioux City throughout his life. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was in the Korean War before being honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Clara Renee John, she preceded him in death. He later met Bernita St. Pierre who became his common law wife, she also preceded him in death. Arthur was a member of The Santee Sioux Nation and was the oldest living tribal member. Arthur was a very big hearted, generous man. He opened his house to others and would turn no one away. If you were in need of anything he would give it to you and never said “no”. His kindness will be missed by many. Those left to honor his memory his son, Chris Denney, Sioux City; daughters: Carressa Denney, Omaha, NE, Amanda Necklace, Sioux City; grandchildren: Clara, Denney, Sioux City, Tim Denney, Vermillion, SD, Collette Ewing, Winnebago, NE, Owen Ortega, Omaha, NE; sisters: Audrey Denney, Sheryl Faye Derby, and Mary Denney Cassens; 2 great-grandchildren, Tyla and Jason, Winnebago, NE; and 2 great-great granddaughters of Winnebago, NE. He is preceded in death by his parents; wives; daughter, Pamela Denney; and several brothers and sisters.
