Barbara J. O'Neill

Barbara J. O’Neill, 92, of South Sioux City, NE passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at a local care facility. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024 at Mohr & Becker Hunt Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Online condolences may be directed to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

 Barbara was born on December 4, 1931 in Walthill, Nebraska, to Joseph and Marie (Muhe) Walchek. She was raised in South Sioux City and attended South Sioux City schools. In fact, Barbara was a South Sioux City resident throughout her life.

 She married John Becker, and the couple welcomed three sons: Mike, Rick, and Randy. She later married Robert “Bob” O’Neill, and they welcomed a son, Kelly. Barbara was an extremely hard-working woman, working and raising her four boys, as John and Bob were both railroad workers. She was always on the move, working from sunup to sundown, doing everything to provide a loving home for her family. After her children were out of the house, Barbara took on the role of cleaning homes in the community until retirement.

 To Barbara, family was absolutely everything. She loved holidays spent with her family, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas (which were both events that required a minimum of one day’s worth of cooking preparation), as well as Sunday evening dinners with her sons as they grew up.

 She was very skilled at needlepoint, and in her later years Barbara enjoyed doing puzzle books, playing games and card games, and bingo. She also enjoyed her many shopping trips with her daughter-in-law, Marcia.

 Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Mike Becker (Marcia), Randy Becker, and Kelly O’Neill (Etta); a brother, Ron Walchek; a granddaughter, Shelby Becker; and a great-grandson, Noah.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Rick Becker; a sister, Ramona Johnson and a sister-in-law, Janey Walchek.
