Betty Jean Mahr

Betty Jean Mahr, 92 of Sioux City, passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Pioneer Valley in Sergeant Bluff following a lengthy illness.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday at Mater Dei Parish-Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The funeral service will be live streamed on the Mater Dei Home Page. Rev. Mark Stoll will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday with a vigil service at 7:00 P.M. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. The Vigil Service will be live streamed at https://youtu.be/QFpfdnX-X5g. Betty was born April 16, 1929 in South Sioux City, NE; she was the daughter of Fred W. and Edna Mae (Dixon) Klasey. Betty grew up in South Sioux City and graduated from South Sioux City High School. She was editor of the school paper and a member of the National Honor Society. Betty attended Edwards Business Institute.

On August 16, 1949, Betty married Paul A. Mahr and to this union four children were born, Dennis, Barbara, Kathryn and Maureen.

Betty worked for Royal Typewriter Company, Securities Acceptance, Fairmont Foods, Hertz Rent-A-Car, Avis Rent-A-Car, All Wheel Drive, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, and The Iowa Department of Human Services as an advanced clerk typist where she retired at age 72 in 2002. She also was an Avon Sales Representative for over 30 years.

Betty was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Center for Active Generations. She was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary; she was an officer of the Sioux City Women’s Club and past officer of the League of Women Voters. Betty was a Democratic Precinct Chairperson.

Survivors include her children: Dennis J. Mahr (Carol Langin) of South Sioux City, Barbara Haley (Steve) of Sioux City, Kathryn Harrington (Greg Kunsky) of Columbia, MD and Maureen Aiken of Lenexa, KS; a sister-in-law: Ethelyn Klasey of Huntington Beach, CA; 7 grandchildren: Amanda Barger (Brian), Eric Haley, Winston Harrington (Brandi), Cheston Harrington, Daniel Aiken (Kelsey Wilson), Timothy Aiken and Sophie Langin; together with 6 great grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Thomas and Wayne Klasey; a sister Elaine Carlson; a brother-in-law LeRoy “Bud” Carlson, sister-in-law Ruth Klasey; a son-in-law David Aiken and Betty’s special friend Fred W. Davenport, Jr.
