Charles L. "Chuck" Fowler

Charles (Chuck) L. Fowler Jr., 80, of South Sioux City passed away Thursday, January 13, 2022, at a Coleridge, NE nursing home.

Services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Charles was born September 8, 1941 in South Sioux City, NE, the son of Charles Sr. and Ella (Matney) Fowler.  He grew up in South Sioux City, NE and married Marlene Martin on February 16, 1963.  Charles worked for the City of South Sioux City for 43 years. He started as a street sweeper and garbage pickup worker and worked his way up to being a supervisor in the street department.  

In August of 1999, he was awarded the Employee of the Month with the following being stated, “Charles has been here since August of 1961.  Charles has seen many things change over the years starting with hand sweeping Dakota Avenue, to the sweeper with no cab on it, and finally to today’s model.   Snow plowing meant having two people in the snowplow with one person having to hand crank the plow.  Charles is one of the best maintainer operators in the city.  Charles has a great memory – he even knows where every storm sewer pipe is – without needing a map.”  Charles would retire in 2004.

Charles was an avid Husker fan, enjoyed camping and fishing, watching old western movies, and dancing.  He was very hardworking, often having many side jobs to help support his family.  His family and his wife were always his top priority.   

Survivors include his wife Marlene Fowler of Coleridge, NE; children:  Steven (Michelle) Fowler of Council Bluffs, IA, Terry (Monica) Fowler of Homer, NE, Pam (Bryon) Oines of Sioux City, and Kathy (Troy) Hummel of Pinellas Park, Florida; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother Richard (Donna) Fowler of South Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Danny Fowler, and sister Mary Lou Wakefield.
