Charlotte was born Charlotte Hyde on April 13, 1927 to Ernest and Cora (Meyer) Hyde in Sioux City. She attended school in Pierson, Iowa, and graduated from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa. Following graduation, Charlie worked at St. Luke’s Hospital, where she met Bud Ruring. The two were married at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City on June 3, 1949. She also spent a year teaching at a country school.
Charlie was born and raised in the church, being baptized in the Salem Lutheran Church in Pierson, Iowa. Her faith continued throughout her life, and she was a longtime member of Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. She enjoyed being active in the church by teaching Sunday School for many years.
In her spare time, Charlie loved playing board and card games with family, gardening, traveling, fishing, birdwatching, making candles, and collecting Christmas churches to display during the holidays alongside her white (always white) Christmas trees. When she could, she loved her Friday night dinners with Bud at Sneaky’s Chicken or Tasty Inn & Out. She was known for her sense of humor, her legendary Thanksgiving dinners, and her karaoke and dance sessions at the nursing home.
Charlie loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than anything, and would lovingly refer to them as her “little angels.”
She is survived by her three daughters: Deborah Terry, Janine (Craig) Wiggs, and Teri (Mark) Bierman; 11 grandchildren: Shane Wortman, Pepper Wortman, Nick Wortman, Carmen Peterson, Max Wiggs, Chuck Wiggs, Allen Wiggs, and Kelli Wiggs, Sage Johnson, Bailey Johnson, and Jamie Monnin; and 16 great-grandchildren, plus one more on the way!
She was preceded in death by her husband Bud in 1993; her parents; and her sister, Betty Sheibels.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all her wonderful caretakers and nurses at St. Luke’s, who always gave her the most loving care possible.
