Clare Galvin of South Sioux City, NE passed away at his home on April 15th. Funeral services will be at St Michael's Catholic Church, 1405 1st Avenue, in South Sioux City, Nebraska on Monday, April 20th at 10:30, preceded by a rosary at 10:00. A gathering will be held following the funeral service at the Knights of Columbus Hall. A private family gravesite burial will be held later. Friends and relatives may visit with his family at Mohr Funeral Home, 1431 West 29th Street in South Sioux City on Sunday, April 19th from 5:00 PM until the time of the Vigil and Eulogy at 7:00 PM.Clare was born November 29, 1926 at the Battle Creek, IA Hospital to Ray and Ethel Galvin. The youngest of four children, he grew up on a farm about 6 miles South of Holstein during the Great Depression. Clare graduated from Holstein High School in 1943 at the age of 16 and attended Creighton University for one year since he was still too young for the service. In the summer of 1944 he enlisted in the Navy. There, he was accepted into their V-12 Program and was enrolled in medical school at the University of Louisville. When the war came to an end, the V-12 Program was discontinued and he was discharged in November 1945.He returned to Creighton in 1946 and in 1948 enrolled in the John Marshall Law School in Chicago. While attending law school he drove a taxi at night in Chicago and was thankful he never had any trouble. After graduating in 1952 and passing the Iowa and Nebraska Bar, he was employed by the Joe Morten Insurance Agency in South Sioux City, NE. In 1956 he helped form Great West Casualty and he worked there for the next 38 years. He retired from Great West as Vice President/Legal in 1991. In 'retirement', he spent several years mediating bodily injury lawsuits and disability claims.In 1973, Clare exchanged the home place in Holstein for a new farm closer to home, just southwest of Jackson, NE. As is true with most farmers, Clare continued to farm his entire life, regularly driving out to check on the corn, beans and cats. In 1952 Clare was wed to Maureen Vaa from Hubbard, NE and had 4 children; Laurie, Mark, Tami and Michael. Maureen did not live to see her children or grandchildren grow as she died in 1969 at the age of 36.Clare was very fortunate to marry again, to Cathie Bowen-Fouts, who had also lost her husband. Cathie has two daughters, Shari and Shelly.Clare is survived by his wife, Cathie Galvin of South Sioux City; children Laurie Chapman of Yankton, SD; Shari (Bob) McIntire of Omaha, NE; Shelly (Dave) Ludwig of Sioux City; Mark (Sue) Galvin of Vermillion, SD; Tami (Dave) Giese of Rosevilla, CA; Michael Galvin of Omaha; his grandchildren Brooke (James) Ledesma, Jacob Glasson, Nick Long, Alex Galvin, Cassandra Long, Haley (Cameron) Carter, Morgan Larson, Jefferson Galvin and Mackenzie Galvin and great-grandchildren Jaelyn and Giana LedesmaHe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers John Galvin and Jim Galvin; his sister, Margaret Younglove; his first wife Maureen Galvin and a son-in-law Robert Chapman.
