Darrel W. Engel

Darrel W. Engel, 86 of South Sioux City, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013.Services will be 10:00 A.M.on Monday, July 15, 2013 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2013 from 5-8 PM, with the family present at 6:00 P.M. and a Rosary at 7:30 pm at Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City.Darrel was born on September 27, 1926 in Bloomfield, Nebraska, the son Henry and Marjorie (Lass) Engel. He grew up in the Bloomfield area. He met Mary Crowe at a dance at Providence Hall in Jackson. While courting her, Darrel rode horseback for several miles to see her. They dated for two years before they were united in marriage on October 20, 1947 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City. The couple was blessed with five children. He also worked two jobs, Sioux City Dressed Beef and Armour Beef Plant. When he retired from the packing plant he ran a service station with his brothers, Warren, Melvin and Vernon, from 1969 to 1989 named Engel's Mobil Oil and Engel's Used Cars. Darrel also helped Mary in the lunchroom at St. Michael's. He then went into business for himself selling cars.He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the South Sioux City Eagles Club #2492. Darrel was an avid horseman, and spent many vacations with Mary at the horse races at Columbus, Grand Island and Hot Springs, Arkansas. Darrel was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a devout Catholic, family man and mentor. He was a friend to everyone and a stranger to no one. He will be greatly missed.Darrel is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter, Linda (Jim) Kellen; sons, Darrel "Larry" Engel, Terry (Donna) Engel and Mark (Janet) Engel; daughter in-law, Starla Engel; brother, Vernon (Lena) Engel; sisters, Delores Stark, Joyce (LeRoy) Novak, Marcella Henning, Laura (Marvin) Hansen, Helen Sessions, MaryAnn (Dick) McNear, and Yvonne (Marvin) Barge; grandchildren, Lori Kellen Selig and Jase Kellen, Laci, Chance, Kayla, Scott and Justin Engel, Travis Nobel, Colin and Christopher Engel; 15 great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Randy; brothers, Verle, Melvin and Warren Engel; sisters, Jean Van Cleave and Darlene Kelley.The family request in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the family for donations to be determined at a later date.
