David Lee Mellick, 77, of Jackson, NE, passed away August 26, 2022 at a local nursing home. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hubbard, NE. Visitation will be Friday, September 2, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 P.M., with a rosary at 5:00 P.M. and a vigil at 7:00 P.M. all at the church. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hubbard, NE.
David was born on September 25, 1944 in Bartlett, NE to Delbert and Agnes (Stromer) Mellick. He graduated from high school and went on to attend Morningside College. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1967. On June 7, 1969, he was united in marriage to Peggy Zurcher in Crofton, NE. He was devoted to his faith and was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. David was a farmer for most of his life as well as working at Tyson for 18 years as a scale master. He enjoyed working outside, farming, music, stained glass, watching westerns and Nebraska football, talking to people and time with family. He was on the Dakota Thurston County Fair Board for thirty-five years and on the Selective Service Board for twenty years. He also sang with the Barbershop Chorus in Sioux City a few years and a member of St. Mary’s Choir for many years.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Peggy Mellick, Jackson, NE; sons, Christopher (Millie) of Grapevine, TX, Mark (Tammy) of Pender, NE, and Brian (Melinda) of Lincoln, NE; 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; siblings, Arnold (Reta) and Darrell (Janet) Mellick of Jackson, NE; brother-in-law, Ray Casaday; and two nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Agnes Mellick; and a sister, Charlotte Casaday.
