Dateline: South Sioux City, NEDelores Hawkins Porter, 88, of South Sioux City passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2018 at home.Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Sioux City, NE, with burial at Memorial Park in Sioux City, IA. Visitation will be Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE.Delores Pearl was born January 31, 1930 in Stratton, NE, the eldest daughter of Ross and Josephine Hawkins. She grew up on a farm near Trenton, NE attending country school with her four siblings. In grade school she would ride the family horse to school and walk the 3 miles home. She graduated from Trenton High School in 1947, after which she taught school for three years at area country schools.She was united in marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Wayne Porter, on December 27, 1949 in Trenton, NE. After their marriage they moved to Council Bluffs, IA where Wayne was employed on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. They moved to Dakota City, NE in 1958, where they raised their three children, JoElla, Sidney and Monty. Delores worked as a secretary at the Broyhill Company and later as a secretary at the Dakota City and Lewis and Clark Elementary schools. She loved the teachers and the children which led to her last job at Wee Care Preschool and Daycare as their cook, morning greeter and "Grandma" to all the students. Wayne and Delores enjoyed traveling and camping all over the United States in their RV and made many trips with their siblings and spouses to Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada. After Wayne's retirement, they continued their RV travels and wintered in Florida, Arizona and Texas with family and good friends.Delores was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Sioux City. She was a Husker fan, a South Sioux City Cardinal fan, and loved playing cards with her card club ladies, being a member for over 50 years. Her favorite role was being a grandma, a great-grandma and a great-great-grandma and she always looked forward to those grandkids visits. Berger and Porter Family reunions were very important to Delores and she was able to attend the last Berger reunion in Monteagle, TN last summer with all of her family. She was well known for her sugar cookies, homemade ice cream and the best fried chicken in the world.She is survived by her husband, Wayne; son, Sid (Terri) of S. Sioux City; grandchildren, Betsy (Randy) Kleinberg of Lawton, IA, Jessica (Daniel) Nelson of S. Sioux City, Reese (Katie) Porter of Lisle, IL; great-grandchildren, Baili (Steve) Henri, Morgan Kleinberg,(Slade Young), Connor, Eli, and Josie Nelson; and one great-great-grandson, Aiden Henri and one on the way; her siblings and spouses, Duke and Jean Hawkins, Detta and Tom Chapman, Dottie and Jeff Hoffman; sister-in-law, Jean Milliken; and many nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Monty; her daughter, JoElla (Jody) Lindquist; and her brother, Don Hawkins and his wife Betty.
