Dennis Michael Yanney was born on March 8, 1941, in Sioux City, IA. He passed away peacefully at his residence in Sioux City on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the age of 83.
Dennis was a distinguished business owner and operator. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to successfully open and manage several establishments throughout his life, including Noah's Ark and the Dairy Queen in Morningside.
Dennis was raised in Sioux City by his mother, Mary Jacobs Yanney. He graduated from East High School and continued his studies at Morningside College for a short time.
He was deeply family-oriented, holding steadfast the values of putting God first, followed by family. In his earlier years, Dennis played the trumpet and formed a band with his brother and friends. Judo was an added interest of his. He taught many classes and competed in competitions. Dennis was also known for his great sense of humor and diverse interests in religion, philosophy, the medical field, and space, often engaging in meaningful conversations with those around him while enjoying a cigar!
In addition to his business pursuits, Dennis had a rich array of hobbies. He found joy in gardening, model airplanes, and train sets. His contributions to his faith community were significant; he was very active at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, serving in the choir and as a church chanter for 65 years.
Dennis leaves behind his loving wife, Karen Yanney, and their three daughters: Kelly (Adams) Yanney of Omaha, NE; Kimberly and husband Anthony Bumgarner of Woodbury, MN; and Ashley and husband Josh Stevens of Sergeant Bluff. He also will be remembered by his grandchildren: Taylor and Brayden Adams, Ava Bumgarner, and Kane Yanney, as well as his three step-grandchildren: Arianna, Jason, and Sarah Stevens. Additionally, he is survived by two sisters-in-law, LaVonne Van Der Sluis of Sheldon, IA, and Marlys Fear of Olds, IA, as well as a niece, nephew, and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jacobs Yanney; his grandson, Garrett Bumgarner; twin brother, Vance Yanney; three brothers-in-law, Dawain and wife Joan Fear, Gaylon Fear, and Harold Van Der Sluis; along with several aunts and uncles.
A visitation will be held on Monday, January 13, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 PM at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, located at 1100 Jones St, Sioux City, IA, 51105. A funeral service will follow the next day on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 10:00 AM, also at St. Thomas Orthodox Church. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Orthodox Cemetery in Graceland Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
