Donald E. “Don” Yockey, 89, of Sioux City passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at a Sioux City hospital.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 7 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2022 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel (3220 Stone Park Blvd.) in Sioux City. Military honors will be presented at the funeral home following the service. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Don, the son of Forrest and Ethel (Speer) Yockey, was born December 15, 1932 at Anthon, IA. He grew up in the Anthon area and attended country school. In his early teenage years, he started helping on the family farm until being drafted into the United States Army. Don served his country from January 12, 1953 until December 24, 1954. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Woodbury County.
On December 22, 1957, Don was united in marriage to Bernita I. Mahin and this union was blessed with six children. Don was a lifelong farmer who raised row crops and livestock until his retirement.
Don’s hobbies included: reading the daily newspaper, watching The Lawrence Welk Show, and he enjoyed anything that had to do with tractors. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family and teasing his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bernita; six children: Ron (Sue) Yockey, Dave (Renae) Yockey, Donnita (Steve) Bennett, Darlene (Steve) Bracht, Rhonda (Scott) Leuer, and Rob (Sharon) Yockey; fourteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother, Johnny Yockey; and two sisters-in-law: Irene Yockey and Vera Yockey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: LeRoy Yockey and Howard Yockey.
