Dorothy Lucylla Fiala

   Dorothy Lucylla Fiala, 92, of Sioux City died on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at a local nursing home.

   Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday March 9th, at the Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, with Chaplain Scott Squires officiating.  Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday March 8th, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.   The family respectfully requests that masks be worn at both services.  Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, Sioux City. 

   Dorothy Fiala was born April 27, 1929 in Bronson, Iowa, to Noah and Violet (Brown) Smith.  She attended school in Bronson and was valedictorian of her Senior class.  Dorothy married Robert (Bob) Fiala of Sioux City, Iowa on May 14, 1952, they later divorced.  Dorothy worked at Northwestern Bell as an operator, she was promoted to supervisor, was transferred to Omaha with US West and ended her career writing training for new operators.  After retiring in 1986 she worked for the Head Start program in Sioux City, and Younkers.  Dorothy was active in the community, at her church, and at Sunrise Retirement.  She volunteered many years for Iowa SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) and received the Governor's Volunteer Award twice for her service.  Dorothy enjoyed traveling to visit her children, grandchildren and family.  She loved working in her yard, cooking, baking, knitting and tatting.

   Survivors include three daughters, Susan Johannsen of Arvada, CO, Vickie Fiala and her husband Bob  Taylor of Bete Grise, MI, Laura Behrens of Sioux City, one son, John Fiala and his wife Cindy of Frederick,  CO,  three grandchildren, Mike (Ashley) Behrens of Cary, NC,  Brandon Fiala of Rio Rancho, NM, and  Rachel Behrens (Tony Keenan) of Denver, CO; two great grandchildren, Ethan and Lila Behrens, one  brother-in-law Larry Fiala of Sioux City, one sister-in-law Glenda Truesdell of Sioux City, several cousins,  nieces and nephews. 

   Other close family, Nancy and Kim Ludtke, Gina, Wayne, Laeana and Eloise Mahan, Paige, Daniel, Donl and Daxtn Ball, Dane, Christina, Vance, Harper, Tatum and Sloan Adams, Duane Behrens, and Joe Arnt.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, George, William (Bill), Gene, Raymond, Robert (Bob), Richard (Dick) and three sisters Helen, LoVina, and Ava. 

   Memorials may be directed to the Elliott Creek Presbyterian Church in Bronson, IA.

   Pallbearers will be Brandon Fiala, Mike Behrens, Tony Keenan, Wayne Mahan, Gary Lewon, and Tim Hummel. 

   The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses on 8th floor SW at MercyOne Hospital, Hospice of Siouxland, and the nurses and staff at Sunrise.

   Special thanks to nephew and niece Tim and Deb Hummel for their help with Mom’s care.  Also, our sincere gratitude to Ellen McGuire at Sunrise for taking such great care of Mom.
