Dr. Guy Posey of Sioux City passed away March 6, 2019, at home of lung cancer. A private burial was held.
A Memorial and Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, March 30, 2019, at the Scottish Rite building in Sioux City, 801 Douglas Street. The celebration of life/ memorial will commence at 4:00 PM with family present in the library one hour prior for visiting. A plated dinner and organized “toasts” will follow the service. Pastor Neil Peck, Reverend Eric Sayonkon and Pastor Steve Jewett will officiate. The beautiful Masonic funeral oration will be done as well.
Guy was born on April 27, 1954, to Bernard and Dora (Reed) Posey in Washington D.C. He grew up surrounded by creeks and woods in Camp Springs, Maryland. Guy graduated from Crossland High School in 1972, The University of Maryland (Cum Laude) in 1976 - B.A. and received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1980. Dr. Posey completed the Family Practice Residency program in Sioux City and for approximately 4 years was with doctors Taylor and Burgfechtal in family medicine. He then became an Emergency Room Physician, serving both Sioux City hospitals. His longest and last employment was with Unity Point-St. Luke’s. Dr. Posey practiced medicine for 34 years.
Guy was united in marriage to Lynn Mikkelsen on January 4, 1986 in Sioux City, at St. James United Methodist Church. As a medical professional, Lynn was most grateful to be able to provide critical care for him at home until his death.
Dr. Posey was instrumental in starting the Paramedic Program in Sioux City. He was the Volunteer Medical Director of all the Emergency Medical and Paramedic Programs at WITCC for 18 years. Additionally, he was on the pre-hospital committee that started helicopter service out of Mercy 1, on the Board of Siouxland Paramedics, a triage physician at Unity Point- St. Luke’s- during the crash of Flight 232, member of the Woodbury County Medical Society, Iowa State Medical Association and American Academy of Family Physicians and First aid merit badge counselor for Boy Scout Troop 208. Dr. Posey was awarded the State of Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1989. He helped found the Wildlife Lodge and Clinic in 2002 and was a member of the pastor/ parish relationship committee at St. James United Methodist Church.
In his youth, Guy was a member of the cousins Viking’s Club expanding onward to Boy Scouts and ultimately to Eagle Scout. He played the saxophone and in late high school and college years was a member of the band, Burgundy, based out of Maryland. Later in life, Guy enjoyed pistol shooting, reading, some golf and woodworking projects.
The Love of his life on earth, however, was Masonry. Guy was raised in Landmark Lodge #103, A.F. & A.M., September 10, 1984. He served as Master in 2003. He was a duel member with Twilight Lodge #329 in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Guy served as the Grand Lodge of Iowa Chairman of the Credentials Committee, as Grand Marshal in 2009-2010 and Grand Treasurer in 2017-2018. He also held a District Lecturer certificate. Guy was a member of the Sioux City York Rite bodies, St. Bartholomew Conclave, Abu Bekr Shrine, Red Cross of Constantine and the Sioux City Scottish Rite. With the Scottish Rite, he obtained his 33rd Degree and was Director of the Work from 2004 until his death.
Guy was a man of character and a character….. he enjoyed good conversation and impacted the lives of many. He will be missed.
Guy is survived by his wife, Lynn Mikkelsen Posey; mother-in-law, Frances Mikkelsen; aunt, Juanita Posey; cousins: Marilyn (Posey) Turner, Reverend Dr. Fred (Cindy) Baltz, Ron (Lorna) Posey, Bill (Shelly) Posey, Everett (Pat) Baltz, Kirk (Arlene) Winkler; and many wonderful extended family members and cherished friends..
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Dora Posey; father-in-law, Carleton Mikkelsen; aunts and uncles: Bonnie (Lloyd) Britton, Roscoe (Evelyn) Posey, Helen (Eugene) Baltz, Ken (Elaine) Posey and Everett Posey.
