Duane Leroy Whitead, 77, of Sioux City, IA passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at his home.Memorial services will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Mohr Funeral Home, 1431 W. 29th Street, South Sioux City, NE. Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M., with the family present at 6:30 P.M. on Saturday at the funeral home.Duane was born on January 1, 1936 at home in Plymouth County, the son of Marion Edward and Marguerite Pearl (Stephens) Whitead. He was raised in Sioux Township in Plymouth County and went to the country schools in that area through the eighth grade. He attended Central High School. When he wasn't attending school, he worked on the family farm.Duane married the loving mother of his children, Marie Fuehrer on January 8, 1954 in Elk Point, SD. They had five children, Duane M., Randy, Ron, Dianne and Joan.Duane drove truck for AJ Burns and was a diesel mechanic for Sioux City Truck and Sioux City Mack. After he retired, he returned to drive as an independent contractor. He loved horses and was President of the JPH Saddle Club. He was very proud of the log cabin he and his two sons built on Military Road.Survivors include his children, Duane M., Randy, and Ron (Chris) Whitead, all of Sioux City, Dianne Milbrodt of Hooper, NE, and Joan (Bill) Williams of Madison, WI; a brother, Rep. Wesley (Donna) Whitead of Sioux City; two sisters, Margaret (Ellis) Massey of Sioux City and Norma Burger of Hooper, NE; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.Duane was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; a brother, Merritte; brother-in-law, Jim Burger; and grandson, Robert Milbrodt.
