Ernest John "Ernie" Petty

Ernest John "Ernie" Petty, a beloved member of the Elk Point community, passed away on August 17, 2024, at the age of 94.

Per his request, cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at Kober Funeral Home in Elk Point.

Born on July 25, 1930, in Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Edna (Jans) Petty. Ernie attended Westfield Schools. He married Doris Lundgren on September 20, 1952, in Elk Point, SD. 

Ernie dedicated his life to farming, a vocation that brought him immense joy and allowed him to connect deeply with nature and his cherished cattle. His work ethic and passion for the outdoors were matched only by his love of fishing and spending time with his family. After retirement from farming, he transitioned to work for the Township as a road grader operator, a position he held with pride, contributing to the maintenance and improvement of his local community. He was also a member of the Farmers Elevator Board for many years.

Ernie is survived by his devoted wife Doris Petty of Elk Point, SD; his loving daughters, Deb Girard of Elk Point, Donna (Dan) DeBuhr of Elk Point, SD, and Dawn (Gary) Pribil of Madison, SD. He will also be remembered by his grandchildren, Tim (Jerri) Gale, John Gale, Belinda (Chris) Trometer, Tony DeBuhr, Danielle (Alex) Jackson, Dustin (Erica) DeBuhr, Casey (Kari) DeBuhr, Jessica (Nik) Bjordal, Nicole (Tyler) Steele, and Nick Petty; as well as 18 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Lyna Wiberg of Alcester, SD.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, his son Doug Petty, grandsons Terry and Chris DeBuhr, and three sisters: Agnes, Mary, and Phyllis.

Ernie’s faith in family, hard work, and nature's beauty will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who loved him.
