F. Gene DeRoin, 72, of Jackson, NE passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, NE after a lengthy illness.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, February 16, 2015 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, NE with Father Paul Albenesius officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in rural Jackson. Visitation will begin at 5:00 P.M, with the family present at 6:00 P.M., a rosary service at 6:30 P.M., and a scriptural wake service at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE. Online condolences to the family may be posted at www.mohrfuneralhome.com.Gene was born in Sioux City, IA on September 28, 1942, the only son to parents, Frank and Leola (Frank) DeRoin. He attended school at Jackson Public School, Dakota City Public School, and Heelan. He worked as a machinist at Zenith, started a family and moved to Texas where he worked several different jobs as an iron worker and in construction. He was a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer on the Nebraska circuit and he won several training titles at Atokad Park in South Sioux City, NE and at Ag Park in Columbus, NE. He trained many horses through 2014. He was known at the racetrack as "The Doctor" and "Honest Gene". His outgoing personality made him a fan favorite, and he was interviewed whenever reporters came to the track. Gene married Joan Stolpe on January 6, 1979 at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, NE.His faith was very important to him, and he enjoyed worshipping at various Catholic churches in the area. He was a very gregarious man and had many friends. His life revolved around his family, his friends, and his horses. He enjoyed wheeling and dealing and loved to visit. His family and his many friends thought the world of him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Joan DeRoin of Jackson, NE; children, Randy DeRoin, Christine Moore and Toni DeRoin all of Houston, TX, Dr. Jamie DeRoin of Palm City, FL, Michelle (Yuri) Yaranga of Youngstown, OH, and Shawn (Laurel) DeRoin of Jackson, NE; and grandchildren, Ryan and Jared DeRoin and Christopher Moore all of Houston, TX.Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Leola DeRoin.
