Gary D. Kampfe, 75 of South Sioux City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 surrounded by his loved ones. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2022 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel with Dawn Neal Officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Sunday, August 14th at the funeral home from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. with a 3:00 p.m. Remembrance Service. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com Gary was born on August 5, 1947 to Edward and Alyce Kampfe. He grew up in South Sioux City area before joining the United States Air Force in May 1966. He joined the Air Force May 12, 1966 completing his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Gary was stationed in the Philippines at Clark Air Force Base (509th Fighter Interceptor Squad Rory US Pacific, US Pacific Air Forces) during the Vietnam War. Military medals/awards include: GCM, NDSM, Small Arms Marksmanship Ribbon, and Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, Outstanding Unit Award, and Vietnam Service Medal. Gary received an Honorable Discharge. He belonged to the American Legion of South Sioux City, Nebraska, enjoying his membership for 34 years. Gary married his high school sweetheart Colleen Hansen on February 3, 1968 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They enjoyed 50 years together, both loving country music and being members of the Strollers Car Club. Gary’s passion was his “58 Chevy and his Corvettes. Later Gary met and married Jeanne Johnson in March of 2020. They enjoyed a short time together before Jeanne’s passing in October of 2021. Gary was an auto body repair man before joining the railroad. He worked over 35 years before retiring in December of 2008. Gary enjoyed his garden and sharing it with his neighbors. Always ready to lend a helping hand throughout the neighborhood. Gary’s long-time and best friends were John and Smitty. John and Gary were grade school friends, Air Force buddies, and co-workers for the railroad. Gary had a very special neighborhood and friends including the Strollers Car Club members. Gary is survived by his sisters of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Cheryl Hutchins, Judy Engel and Barbara (Jay) Bowman, and Beverly (Kenny) Smith of Gibbon, Nebraska. Gary was preceded in death by his first wife Colleen and his second wife Jeanne; parents; three brothers Terry Kampfe, Larry Kampfe, and Karey Kampfe; sister Margo Smith; and a nephew Danny Hutchins.
