Gary D. Sappingfield

Dateline: South Sioux City, NEGary D. Sappingfield, 64, of South Sioux City, NE passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Friday, July 17, 2015 at his residence.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at the Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE. Burial will be in the Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at the funeral home.Gary was born August 2, 1950 in Sioux City, IA, the son of Eldon and Dorothy (Darrow) Sappingfield. He grew up in South Sioux City and graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1969. He married Susan Speck on November 28, 1969 in Sioux City, IA. To this union two children, Eliot and Amy, were born. He later married Alison McDole of Sioux City, IA, and to this union a daughter, Iva was born. Gary was drafted into the U.S. Army in February, 1970 and served during the Vietnam War. He attended carpentry school and worked for construction companies in the Sioux City area through the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local #948. More recently Gary worked as a carpentry instructor at the Job Corps in Denison where he found great fulfillment sharing his knowledge, wisdom and wit with young people. He retired in 2010. Gary was very active in the community and was incredibly generous with his time and compassion. He served as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders, loved motorcycles, travel, woodworking, his custom Harley and his restored 1966 VW Beetle. Above all else, Gary was devoted to his family, and cherished spending time with his children and granddaughters. Survivors include his father, Eldon Sappingfield of South Sioux City, NE; children, Eliot (Stephanie) Sappingfield of Nixa, MO, Amy (Troy) Beam of Sioux City, IA, Cody McDole of Kansas City, MO and Iva Sappingfield of Lake City, IA; grandchildren, Marilee, Zo«, Bailey, Monroe and Logan; brothers, Terry (Cathy) Sappingfield of Gardner, KS and Duane (Kathy) Sappingfield of Fremont, NE; former wife, Susan Sappingfield of Sioux City, IA; and former wife, Alison Hackathorn of Platte City, MO; as well as many nieces and nephews.Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Sappingfield.
