Gayle F. "Jake" Ferdig, 80, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2010 at a Sioux City hospital.Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at the Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE with Pastor Carol Jean Stapleton from St. Paul United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Dakota City Cemetery in Dakota City, NE. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with the family present from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. He was born and raised in Climbing Hill, IA, the youngest of seven boys and one girl. He graduated from Climbing Hill High School on May 14, 1949. He married the love of his life, Joyce L. Stingley on November 5, 1949 in Elk Point, S.D. The couple had three children, Terry, Curt and Shelly. In 1950 Gayle and his brother, Jewel, started Ferdig Contracting. In 1969 Gayle partnered with his best friend and brother-in-law, Dale Stingley, and continued doing business as Ferdig Contracting. Gayle retired in 2007. Gayle and Joyce were long time residents of South Sioux City, NE. Gayle was a loved and respected husband, father, brother and grandfather.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce L. Ferdig on October 16, 2003; sister, Ione Peterson; brothers, Lester, Bernard, Marshall, Everett and Russell Ferdig; and grandson, Bryce Ferdig.Survivors include one brother, Jewel (Juanita) Ferdig of Sioux City, IA; sons, Terry (Kathy) Ferdig of Sioux City, IA; Curt (Connie) Ferdig of Dakota Dunes, SD; daughter, Shelly E. Ferdig of South Sioux City, NE; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
