Gene Kelly Kenagy 67, of Sgt. Bluff, IA, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, with his brother and sister-in-law by his side Wednesday August, 31, 2022, at Embassy Rehab and Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 7th at Meyer Brother’s Morningside Chapel. Visitation will be 10-11 A.M. prior to the services. Interment will be at Roseland Park Cemetery at a later date.
Gene was born in Mountain Home, Idaho to Gloria (Johnson) and Dwight Kenagy on August 17, 1955. In 1956, he moved to Sioux City, IA. He attended school at Woodrow Wilson through the 8th grade. He moved to Glenwood, IA and then returned to live at the Goodwill in Sioux City, IA. He went to Western Iowa Tech for custodial training I & II and completed the course June 1985. Gene moved to Mid Step Services in February, 2012. He moved to Embassy Rehab and Care Center in September, 2021 after a brief illness.
He was married to Bonita Van Veldhuizen January 13, 1986 in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church.
He was a dishwasher at the Hilton and was employee of the year in 1988. His award was a trip to Phoenix, Arizona. He also washed dishes at Bishops, USA Steak Buffet, Marian Health Center, and Western Iowa Tech Community College. He participated in the Special Olympics in the 1970’s and received multiple awards. He enjoyed his horse, Duke and their ponies King and Prince as a child. He enjoyed going to Camp High Hopes and fishing. He liked the Musketeers, Explorers, Cubs and the Hawkeyes. His traveling highlights were going to Arizona, Alaska and Holland.
Gene is survived by his brother, David (Danette) Kenagy, his brother-in-law, Jack Nelson, nieces and nephews: Jessica Kenagy, Keith (Brigette) Kenagy, Brian Kenagy, Matthew (Kim) Nelson, Sarah Nelson, great nieces and nephews: Dante Thomas, Sierra Jackson, Davion Kenagy, Hannah, Connor and Jace Kenagy, Alex and Austin Nelson, Ashlyn Thiele, Mia Thiphasouk and Finley Spiegel.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joleene Nelson.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Camp High Hopes 5804 Correctionville Rd, Sioux City, IA 51106.
