Gerald "Gary" Gene Armstrong

Ponca, Nebraska

Gerald “Gary” Gene Armstrong passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 in Lincoln, Nebraska, comforted by family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ponca, Nebraska with grandson, Father Augustine Reimers as Celebrant. Burial will follow at South Creek Calvary Cemetery. Visitation, with family present, will be Monday, June 24, 2024, at 5:30pm with a Rosary and Vigil at 7:00pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ponca. Mohr Funeral Home has assisted with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com In lieu of flowers, memorials can be offered to the family for designation to be made at a later date.

 

Gary was born January 28, 1936 to Gerald and Frances (Kneifl) Armstrong in Ponca, Nebraska during a blizzard. He was brought home with a team of horses and sleigh. He attended the one room Sunnyside country school until the eighth grade, then graduated from Ponca Public High School. In 1956, Gary enlisted in the US Army, spending basic training in Ft. Carson, CO. He was transferred to Nuremburg, Germany and received an honorable discharge in Frankfort 1958. 

 

Returning home, he earned his private pilot’s license on the GI Bill. He met a wonderful German girl when he was invited to her birthday party. Gary and Margarete Schweers were married in 1962. They farmed near Ponca while raising their family. 

 

Gary enjoyed computers since early 1980, also enjoyed the guitar, welding, reading and Husker football; his son was on the team in the early 1990s. He was a member of the American Legion.

Gary was most proud of his faithful wife, Margarete, their children, and their 24 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

 

He is survived by his wife, Margarete; children, John (Kim) Armstrong, Anne (David) Krause, Patricia (Jeffery) Reimers, Amy (Rockey) McGinnis, Gerald (Shay) Armstrong, and James (Amy) Armstrong; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; siblings, Mary Armstrong and Jeanne (Armstrong) Montgomery. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Susan, an infant son Paul, brothers Phillip, Patrick and an infant brother, James.
