Gerry Gatzemeyer

October 28, 1969 — September 23, 2024

Sioux City, Iowa

Gerry F. Gatzemeyer, the son of Raymond Sr. and Patricia (Coan) Gatzemeyer, was born on October 28, 1969, in Pender, Nebraska. He passed away at the age of 54 on September 23, 2024, at his residence in Sioux City after bravely fighting pancreatic cancer for the past three months.

Gerry grew up in South Sioux City, Nebraska, where he completed his education at South Sioux City High School. He briefly attended college in Omaha before returning home following the passing of his father. Throughout his life, Gerry was a dedicated employee, spending several years working at Lyle's Garage Door and, most recently, at Combined Pool and Spa.

On May 5, 2014, Gerry was united in marriage to the love of his life, Michele and he was blessed to have her three children in his life, whom he loved like his own.

A passionate Husker football fan, Gerry found joy in life with his various hobbies and interests. He cherished golfing and hunting, but it was spending time at the camper where some of the most treasured memories were made. He was a vibrant presence who was never afraid to light up a room. Known as "the life of the party," Gerry had a unique ability to bring people together and make every gathering unforgettable. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and had a knack for making friends feel like family with his signature phrase, “The Man, The Myth, The Legend,” or referring to himself as the good looking one. Throughout the years, Gerry cherished the companionship of his family, friends, and his dogs: Huckleberry and Frankie.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Michele Gatzemeyer of Sioux City; children: Ben (Mikki) Johnson of Pittsburg, KS, Shanelle Johnson (Connor Jarman) of Kearney, NE, and Zach (Sarah) Johnson of Sioux City. He took great pride in role as a grandfather to Adalyn, Amelia, Quinn, Harper, and Darcy, and his great granddaughter June. In addition, he is survived by Michele’s grandmother, Corinne Malzer; his siblings: DeAnna (William) Woehler, Ricky (Johnette) Gatzemeyer, Ann Gilmore, Tammi Seger, and Billy Gatzemeyer (Jessica Denney); sister-in-law, Stephanie Gatzemeyer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; siblings: Theresa Merkley, Steve Gatzemeyer Sr., Lisa Gatzemeyer, and Raymond Gatzemeyer Jr.; grandson, Benjamin Brown; and great nephew, Raymond Gatzemeyer.

As we remember Gerry, we celebrate a remarkable man who lived life to the fullest. His laughter, kindness, and spirit will forever echo in the hearts of those he touched. Please join us as we celebrate his life during the Nebraska Husker game on Saturday, October 5, 2024 from 3 to 6 p.m. at his “garage” (6400 Morningside Ave.).
