Gordon I. Thompson

Gordon I. Thompson, 76, of Sioux City, passed away October 31, 2021 at his residence. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 6th at 11:00 AM at Morningside Lutheran Church. A visitation with the family present will start one hour prior to the service. Immediately following the service at the Siouxland Home Builders Association building on Stadium Drive in Morningside, there will be a lunch and social reception celebrating stories about Gordy. Gordon was born on June 3, 1945 in Everett, WA to Ernest and Gladys (Saugstad) Thompson. They moved to South Dakota when he was a toddler and grew up on a farm between Wakonda and Vermillion. He enjoyed his upbringing on the farm and spending time with his cousins. He went to Westreville country school before attending Wakonda High School, where he graduated in 1963. He served his country as a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard from 1963 to 1970. He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church.

Gordon was united in marriage to Carolyn Watson on July 9, 1966 in Vermillion, SD. He and Carolyn lived and worked in Vermillion before moving to Sioux City in 1971. Gordon spent the majority of his career working for Terra Industries at the Port Neal plant in Maintenance and as a Supervisor from 1976 until retiring in 2000. He soon realized that retirement wasn’t for him, so he went back to work at Tur-Pak and then later at Kreisers before retiring one last time. Gordon was very mechanically inclined and enjoyed working on cars and things around the house. For many years when their sons were kids, they enjoyed summer weekends at Lake Madison, SD with family and friends. Some other things he enjoyed were grilling, playing cards, gambling in N. Sioux City, watching NASCAR, and a cold one. In his later years he could also be found at home relaxing and watching TV with Judge Judy (or similar), and Hallmark movies being some favorites. He had a big voice and always had a one-liner phrase or joke for about every situation.   

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Carolyn Thompson of Sioux City; Son, Grant (Jill) Thompson of Sioux City with Grandchildren Elizabeth of Durham, NC & Garrett (Sioux City) & Elizabeth of Durham, NC; Son, Brian (Cari) Thompson of Urbandale, IA with Grandchildren Hadlei, Ethan, Harper and Cruz; brother-in-law, Ron (Carmen) Watson; and a host of other cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and parents-in-law Wallace and Luella Watson, and Amos Ellison.
