Gregory Philip Armstrong, better known as “Greger,” passed to Eternal life Friday December 20th, 2024 in Lincoln, NE after a brave and inspiring 33 month long battle with colon cancer.

Greger was the oldest of four, born to Phil and Jolane (Kopal) on May 5th, 1969. He was raised on a farm in rural Ponca, NE and belonged to St Joseph’s Catholic Church where he received Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation. He appreciated and remembered Fr Dan Soltys from that time. Graduating from Ponca High School in 1988, he made lifelong friends (Corey, Dave, Dudley, Marshall, you know who you are!) and “left it all on the field” playing high school football with his friends and cousins. He also achieved Eagle Scout through Boys Scouts of America (just like his Dad) and attended the National Jamboree in Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia where he was able to carry the Troop 200 flag on stage. Greger proudly served 5 years in the Army having spent time in Korea at the DMZ with border control. Upon discharge, he used his GI Bill to attend WIT and received a Degree in Electronic Communications and an Associates Degree in Telecommunications. While there, he had fun and gained more “lifers" (that’s you Mike, Cheryl and Carlette!). Greger worked for IBM and NCR (National Cash Register) fixing ATMs and Debit card machines for nearly 30 years (which by the way, he was excellent at!) in Lincoln and as a result knew people across the city. Having traveled to Korea, Australia (where he got his famous leather Kangaroo hat), the Panama Canal, Mexico, Jamaica, Canada and all over the United States, he was, quite literally, a world traveler. He medically retired June 2022. Greger was fiercely loyal, worked hard, was a foodie, loved wolves, movies, traveling, guns, knives, “his people” and family. He was known to “hold his cards close to his chest” and send or give a thoughtful gift randomly because it made him think of you. Greger listened and was generous, the best kind of friend, thoughtful and independent and possibly a bit stubborn Irish.

Greger was preceded in death by his parents, Armstrong and Kopal grandparents and many other relatives. Survivors include siblings, Paula (Troy) Peters in Ainsworth, NE, Dan (JoJo) in South Sioux City, NE and Casey (Meda) in Bellevue, NE; and niece Laura (boyfriend, Joe McNair), Norfolk, NE, nephew, Luke (Rebekah), great nieces, Lilian and Gabriella as well as great nephew, Baby Boy Peters (due any day), all from Mullen, NE and nephew, David Armstrong from Atkinson, NE.

In leu of flowers, memorials to the Ponca American Legion Post 117 or donors choice. Thank you to all who knew, loved, made memories, cared for, loved and supported Greger in this journey called life. Forever grateful for the gift of our Greger! Now rest in peace!
