Harlan "Smokey" W. Mast

Harlan W. "Smokey" Mast, 86, of South Sioux City, NE passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Elms Health Care Center in Ponca, NE.Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE. Visitation with the family present will begin at 9:00 A.M. prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date in St. Michael's Cemetery in South Sioux City, NE.Harlan was born in Winnebago, NE on September 25, 1930, the son of Harold and Odella (Bergeon) Mast. He grew up in Dakota City, NE and graduated from Dakota City High School in 1948. Harlan married Joanne A. Cahill on May 19, 1952 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, NE. To this union 9 children were born. The couple later divorced. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1950 and from 1954 to 1956. Harlan worked at the Sioux City Stockyards for 40 years.He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, and the South Sioux City Eagles Club. Harlan was actively involved in coaching youth sports programs, was an avid Husker and car racing fan, and he loved to dance, for which he won many trophies. Survivors include his children, Kim (Kathy) Mast of South Sioux City, NE, Kelle (Larry) Farley of South Sioux City, NE, Karen (Timothy) Sibert of Sioux City, IA, Kevin (Diane) Mast of Austin, TX, Kenneth Mast of South Sioux City, NE, Keith Mast & Larry Schou of Vermillion, SD, Tim Mast of South Sioux City, NE, and Michael Mast of South Sioux City, NE; grandchildren, Aaron, Matt, Kayla, Kory, Kristine, Nolan, Nathan, Kaley, Stephanie, David, Kane, Brock and Madelynn; great-grandchildren, Monica, Tatum, Townes, Alaina, Alec, Jamison and Izabel; two brothers, Darrell Mast of CA and John Mast of TX; and a sister, Delores Mast of CA. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Odella Mast; a son, Joseph Mast; and 2 brothers, Kermit and Kenny.
