Harold E. Gathje, 91, of South Sioux City, Nebraska passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017 at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, NE.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, February 10, 2017 at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City with Pastor Douglas Dill officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in rural Wayne, Nebraska. Visitation with the family present will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City.Harold was born December 18, 1925 in Wayne, Nebraska, the son of Eddie and Anna Marie (Gasser) Gathje. He attended country school near Wayne. He was a farmer. Harold married Esther Korn on March 11, 1951 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wayne. He served in the 6th Infantry Division in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, then returned to farming. He and his wife purchased the Hog House on the junction of Highways 116 and 20 in 1976 and operated it until they sold out in 1995 and moved to South Sioux City. Harold worked eleven years for Super Wash in South Sioux City.He was a member of First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City and the South Sioux City American Legion.Survivors include his daughters, Diane Gathje of Sioux City, Iowa and Daytona Caldwell of Yankton, South Dakota; 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harlan (Judy) Gathje of Pender, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Gathje; parents; a son, DeWayne Gathje; and his sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Russell Beckman.
