Helen Irene Brower

June 8, 1933 — January 6, 2021

Helen Irene Brower, 87, of Sioux City, formerly of South Sioux City, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. A private family service will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. The service will be available through live stream at https://youtu.be/cymUnouUYqU. Online condolences can be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Helen was born June 8, 1933, in Sanborn, Iowa, the daughter of Fredrick and Ruth Besgrove. Helen was raised with her two brothers and two sisters in Sibley, Iowa and graduated from Sibley High School where she met the love of her life, Daniel Lee Brower. They married on September 5, 1954. Helen and Dan moved to South Sioux City, Nebraska where they raised their three children Teri, Dan, and Julie. She was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church where Sunday worship was often followed by lunch with dear friends of the congregation.

Helen’s primary focus and greatest joy was her family. Nothing made her happier than having her children and grandchildren together, whether at her home or on family vacations in Okoboji. Helen was a regular volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and Hospice of Siouxland. Her kind spirit and loving heart touched the lives of everyone she met. Although she faced many struggles in her final years, she always approached life with positivity, faith, and grace. Helen often said, “a day without laughter, is a day wasted.”

Helen is survived by her children Teri (Mike) Thavenet of Eldridge, Iowa and their children, Jason, Adam and Kylie; Dan (Amy) Brower of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota and their children, Joey, Sam and Libby; and Julie (Craig) Berenstein of Sioux City, Iowa and their children, Alex and Abby, and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Daniel; her brothers Bill and Garry, and her sisters Betty and Thelma. The family would like to express their most sincere appreciation for the care given by Dr. Joyce, Dr. Peacock, Dr. Wadzinski, and the staffs of Sunrise Retirement Community, the Heritage at Northern Hills, and Hospice of Siouxland.  In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed in Helen’s name to the Immune Deficiency Foundation at primaryimmune.org or the Sioux City Lions Club to benefit the visually impaired.
