Helen Louise Madsen, the daughter of Lars and Hanna Holden, was born on November 12, 1932, in Sioux City, IA. She passed away at Correctionville Specialty Care on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at the age of 92.
Helen grew up in Sioux City and was a graduate of Central High School. Her commitment to learning never waned as she later attended Western Iowa Tech (WIT) to pursue a degree in nursing. This decision would lead to her fulfilling career at St. Luke's Hospital, where she applied her knowledge and compassion in service to others.
In her early years, Helen was united in marriage to David Madsen, and together they were blessed with four children. While dedicated to being a stay-at-home mom during her children’s early years, Helen's nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family. She took immense joy in raising her children and grandchildren, providing them with love, support, and guidance. Later in her life, her caregiving nature was also evident as she lovingly tended to her aging mother.
Helen's personality radiated kindness; she was a loving and caring person who touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She enjoyed pastimes such as completing puzzles and crosswords.
She is survived by her two sons, David Madsen (Barbara) of Arlington, TX, and Mike Madsen (Lisa Schultz-Smith) of Dakota City, NE; her son-in-law Daniel Petersen of Burke, VA; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her favorite nephew, Michael Holden of Stoughton, Massachusetts. Additionally, she is survived by several other relatives who will cherish her memory.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her son Steven Madsen, her daughter Shari Petersen, and her brother Jerald Holden.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
