Ida Backhaus

Ida Backhaus, 93, passed away, Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at MercyOne Hospital in Sioux City, IA. Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave in Sioux City. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Interment burial will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 6, 2023 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com 

Ida was born September 19, 1929 to Clarence A. and Emily E. (Allner) Thomas Sr. in Iowa. She attended Anthon High School. She later went to Ellis School of Cosmetology graduating in 1948. Ida married George R. Madison on May 16, 1946 in Elk Point, SD. He passed away February 6, 1980. To this marriage they had three children. Ida was a beautician at JCPenney’s for numerous years where she retired in 1990. She married Edwin A. Backhaus on August 3, 1990 in Elk Point, SD. He passed away March 18, 1992. You could always find Ida painting, sewing, making crafts or playing cards. She enjoyed her winter months in Arizona and Florida. The one thing Ida loved most to do was dancing. Her laughter and smile will truly be missed by her family and friends.

Ida is survived by her three children: Clifford (Georgia) Madison of Hudson, FL, Cathy (Sam) Collins of Mims, FL, Connie Craig of Sioux City, IA, two grandchildren: Tiffany (Craig) Carmin, Jennifer Thomas, one great-grandchild, Cadey Carmin, one brother, Douglas Thomas, a sister-in-law, Pat Thomas many nieces, nephews and friends. A special thanks to her neighbors, David and Bethany Hahn.

She is preceded in death by her first husband George Madison, second husband, Edwin Backhaus, parents, Clarence and Emily Thomas, two brothers: Jake Thomas, Buzz Thomas, and one son-in-law, Jerry Craig.
