Ilene M. Viers

Ilene M. Viers, 91, of South Sioux City, NE passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City.Per Ilene's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M., with the family present at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date.Ilene was born on July 16, 1925 in rural Allen, NE, the daughter of Arnold and Hedwig (Rogat) Loetscher. She graduated from Allen High School in 1943 and attended secretarial college in Sioux City, IA. She worked as a Secretary at Cudahay Meat Packing Plant in Sioux City. Ilene married Eugene Viers on May 1, 1948 in South Sioux City, NE. They settled in South Sioux City and raised three children. After they married, Ilene worked as a Secretary at DK Baxter, was a homemaker and was known as "The Pie Lady" because she made and sold hundreds of pies. The couple owned and operated Gene's Gun Shop in South Sioux City from 1975 until the mid 80's. Eugene passed away on January 16, 2002.Ilene enjoyed fishing, gardening-planting several large gardens each year, canning, flowers, baking and ceramics. Dogs were also a big part of her life.Survivors include her children, Daniel (Carolyn) Viers of South Sioux City, NE, David Viers of Allen, NE, Denise (Jeff) Belew of South Sioux City, NE; 3 grandchildren, Dawn (Terry) Houpt of Sioux City, IA, Wendy (Todd) Stephan of Ft. Dodge, IA, and Megan (Ryan) Lawrey of South Sioux City, NE; 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Viers; her parents, Arnold and Hedwig Loetscher; a brother, Norman Loetscher and a sister and brother-in-law, Nora (Harvey) Steecker.The family would like to thank the staff at Regency Square and Hospice of Siouxland for their wonderful care.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for designations to be made at a later date.
