Irving "Irv" H. Givot

May 17, 1923 — August 6, 2021

Irv Givot, 98, a native son of Sioux City, Iowa passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021. Irv was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and recently became a great-grandfather. Irv spent his life in Sioux City, which is where he met Sue, his wife of 70-years, and raised his two daughters. Irv left Sioux City to serve in World War II as a Corporal in the Pacific. He returned to Sioux City to manage the family store, Westside Market, which he ran for 51 years. After closing Westside Market, Irv worked at Ivy’s Liquor Store, Kraft, and Wal-Mart and officially retired at 95. Irv also served as a chaplain for the American Legion, was an advisor for BBYO/AZA, and was President of the Big Ten Grocer’s Association.

Irv believed in hard work and greeted everyone with a smile, treating customers as family. He believed in the best of humanity and was ready with a helping hand for people down on their luck. Irv was ahead of his time offering home delivery for customers with health issues and was known to tell needy customers that they could, “Take what you need and pay me when you can.” Irv also volunteered at the local food kitchen and spent many Veterans Days and Memorial Days placing flags on the gravestones of veterans at the local cemetery.

Irv was a proud American who understood the meaning of service and sacrifice. He lived a life guided by the principles of God, gratitude, and family. Irv’s family was his greatest blessing and source of joy and pride. He is survived by Sue Givot, the love and light of his life, his two daughters, Debbie Givot Kronick (Larry) of Omaha, NE, and Jodi Givot Sklar of Milwaukee, WI, his 5 grandchildren Amanda, Richard (Shugar), Phillip, Meagan (Ben), and Shira (Joshua) and his new great grandchild, Julian.

Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Sioux City with full military honors followed by a memorial service at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at Congregation Beth Shalom.  Rabbi Guy Greene will officiate.

Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
