He spent his boyhood days in George and graduated from George High School in 1953. He attended the University of Iowa. He interrupted his college career to serve two years in the Army, and then went back to the university where he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jim began his professional career with L. G. Everist and was assigned to various river projects in South Dakota. He then began a lengthy career with Sioux Tools in Sioux City and retired from there in 2000.In 1975, he met the love of his life, Judy Jones. The two of them enjoyed traveling to Iowa football and bowl games throughout the years. Jim's large extended family kept them busy with holidays and summer lake vacations at Lake Sundown and Lake Chetek. Jim was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and a loyal member of the Town House game watching group. His spirited cheering, along with his Hawkeye attire, will be missed by all of his fellow Hawkeye friends, Sioux Tool retirees, his family, and his and Buddy's friends at the Bacon Creek Dog Park. Jim will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. We hold many happy memories of his humorous stories, his addiction to Iowa Hawkeyes and Fox news. In honor of his surviving four-legged best friend, Buddy, the family requestsdonations be made in Jim's name to America's Vet Dogs (VetDogs.org). Jim's memory will be well served by contributions to this worthwhile cause providing America's veterans with service dogs. Jim is survived by his dog, Buddy (who will now reside with Jim's niece, aveterinarian), his sister, Jeanne Sampson, sister-in-law, Carol Groenewold, nephews Gary (Theresa) Groenewold, David (Suzanne) Groenewold, Jeff (Fay) Sampson, Joel Sampson, nieces Carol (Dennis) Haines, Dr. Ann Sampson, Carey (Rick) Jorgensen. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, his brother, Art Groenewold, and his brother-in-law, Red Sampson. The family would like to thank his neighbor, Ken Boyce, for his companionship and thoughtfulness towards Jim.
