James Aldon Schroder, known to many as Jim, passed away peacefully at his residence in the Riverside area of Sioux City, IA, on March 12, 2025, at age of 87. Born on October 7, 1937, in Walnut, IA, Jim grew up in Shelby, IA.
Jim dedicated four years to serving in the United States Air Force, where he displayed unwavering commitment and dedication until his honorable discharge. Following his service, he made Sioux City his home, where he embarked on a fulfilling career that would define much of his life. He initially worked for a short time at Wilson Trailer but found his true calling as a welder at Sioux City Foundry, a role he proudly maintained for 33 years until his retirement in 1999.
Known for his heart of gold, Jim deeply loved his family. He often brought joy and laughter to their lives. He was affectionately dubbed “Gramps,” “Grandpa Hockey,” "Old Timer," and “Grandpa Grouch” by his grandchildren. It was a long-standing joke within the family that if Jim was seen with a smile, it was sure to rain or snow that day. He was known for his leisurely drives up and down Riverside Blvd. in his maroon Chevrolet truck, earning him the endearing nickname of “Riverside Mayor.”
Jim was the proud husband of Lorraine Schroder, with whom he shared a remarkable marriage of 61 years—the longest in the Riverside area. Together, they raised a loving family that includes children Diane (Michael) Paugh, Curtis (Brenda) Kubly, Keith (Char) Kubly, Dawn (Alan) Herman, Cal (Kelly) Kubly, Rod (Teresa) Schroder, Deb Tyer, and Chris Zimmerman. In addition, he is survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Jim enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests, including stock cars, classic cars, and motorcycles. He could often be found watching pro wrestling or keeping an eye on the weather via the Weather Channel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Wilma Schroder; and one sister, Janice Betts.
A Celebration of Life for Jim will be held at a later date. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
