Jane B. Meginnis, 93, of North Sioux City, SD, passed away peacefully with family by her side on February 15th after a battle with dementia.
Jane was born on December 19th, 1929 to Paul and Nancy Bekins in Omaha, NE. After graduating from Central High School (Sioux City, IA) in 1947, she continued her education and graduated from the University of Colorado. At college, Jane met Lowry Smith and they wed in 1950, going on to have 3 sons, Chris, Forrie & Kam. Their marriage was dissolved in 1975.
In 1977, Jane married Harry Meginnis and they built a life together until his death in 2013. They first lived in Lincoln, NE before moving to Okoboji, IA where they both played golf and she sailed competitively. Wanting to be in a warmer climate they moved to Florida so they could continue to play golf year round. After Florida, they then moved to St. George, UT and enjoyed once again the beautiful golf courses of that area. Summers were spent living at The Forest Queen Mine, an old silver mine that she owned in Crested Butte, CO.
Jane was the epitome of class but also a spunky force to be reckoned with throughout her life! An example of the adventurous nature was her request to celebrate her 80th birthday with a family white water rafting trip down the challenging Colorado River. She was fiercely independent living in a rustic mining shack at an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet in Colorado until she was 90. In addition to her many adventures, she enjoyed entertaining, golfing, playing Bridge, water color painting and always having her dog, Cody by her side.
Jane will be lovingly remembered by her family: Sons, Chris (Julie) of Hood River, OR, Forrest (Dawn) of Crested Butte, CO and Kam (Melissa) of Dakota Dunes, SD. Grandchildren, Dillon, Jarrod (Ashley), Landon (Josie), Cale (Dezzi), Lindsey & Tanner. Great Grandchildren, Bailey, Riley, Eleanor, Dax & Evergreen. Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, her parents, Paul and Nancy Bekins, and her sister, Tigger Jensen.
There will be a family gathering sometime this summer in Crested Butte, CO where her remains will be laid to rest next to her husband, Harry Meginnis.
Memorial may be sent to Sioux City Art Center, Sioux City Public Museum or Morningside College (Paul and Nancy Bekins Scholarship Fund).
