Jerald L. Chapman, 85, of South Sioux City, NE passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, NE.Memorial services were held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Sioux City, NE with Pastor Carol Jean Stapleton officiating. Graveside services with Military Honors were held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Omaha Valley Cemetery near Homer, NE. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE.Jerald was born on January 2, 1928 near Homer, NE, the son of Carl L. and Mary E. (Churchill) Chapman. He attended and graduated from Homer Schools. Upon his graduation he honorably served his country as a member of the United States Navy from 1946 - 1948. He married Bessie Fraser and the family began a lifelong life as farmers in Dixon and Dakota Counties. In 1962 they purchased their farm near Allen and continued to work the land and raise their family until moving to South Sioux City in January of 2004.Jerald was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men's Club. He was also a member of the American Legion.Farming and spending time with his family was his life.He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bessie, of South Sioux City; his son, Wayne (Rita) Chapman of Louisville, NE; daughters, Nancy (Gary) Braden of Wayne, NE and Colleen Peterson of Overbrook, KS; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law.Jerald was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bryce Leo Chapman; three brothers, Donald, Richard and Caleb; two sisters, Treva DeGraff and Fern Knudsen; and a grandson, Michael Braden.The family requests that memorials in his name be made to the South Sioux City American Legion.
