Jo Ann Garvey, 95, of South Sioux City, NE passed away Friday, September 30, 2022 at her home, comforted by family. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home with a visitation from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Pastor Sandra Braasch and Pastor Fred Penner will officiate. Burial will be held at 4:00 P.M. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion, NE. Online condolences can be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Jo Ann Garvey was born September 1, 1927 in Albion, Nebraska, the daughter of Dewey and Alpha (Chase) Miller. She attended school in Albion, graduating in 1945.
After graduation, she worked for her father and brother, Kenneth, in the Dewey Miller Garage in Albion. She married Norman Peterson in 1947; they divorced in 1959. In 1951 she became a partner with her sister, Ruby, and Ruby’s husband, Luther, in Albion Tire and Auto Supply.
Jo Ann married Robert (Bob) Garvey August 17, 1962 and moved to South Sioux City. She volunteered in the schools, was an active member of First Lutheran Church, South Sioux City, a member of Circle 1, co-chaired the “Piecemakers” sewing group and served on various committees. She was a member of the Hobbycraft Extension club and was President of the SSC Chamberettes in 1988. She and Bob were recognized by The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben with the Good Neighbor Citation in 1978.
In 1980, Bob and Jo Ann, and their son, Bill, and his wife, Donna, purchased Sletten’s Trophies. In 1984, Bob and Jo Ann built an office building (the Garvey Building) on W. 29th Street to house their business, Garvey’s Trophy Shoppe, and other offices. In 1991, they sold the business to the original owners (Slettens) and retired. In retirement she enjoyed spending time with friends and family, taking part in their activities and continuing her volunteer work.
Survivors include two sons, Bill (Donna) Garvey, Sr., South Sioux City and Bob Garvey, Mesa, AZ., three grandchildren, Bill (Tracy) Garvey, Jr., Katie Garvey and Michael Garvey (Kourtney Janata), five great-granddaughters, Lula, Mila, Kirra, Willa and Annistyn, a sister, Beverly Romberg, Albion, Nebraska, and many nieces and nephews, who were very much a part of her life. One day after her passing, a sixth great-granddaughter, Karsyn Jo, was born to Mike and Kourtney.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004, daughter, Barbara, in 1975, her parents, an infant brother, Donald, brother, Kenneth, and sister, Ruby Haas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family to be divided among her favorite charities.
